Characteristics
Detection for Downloader-BT was added for a 32-bit PE file, of filename WINNET.EXE, and size 65,536 bytes (the file is not packed internally).
The application might arrive as an e-mail file attachment in spam e-mails. The user has to manually launch the application in order for it to initialize. It can also be distributed in external, third party application packages and has also been encountered at certain file-sharing sites such as Kazaa.
Downloader-BT is not a virus/trojan but a potentially unwanted application. It pretends to assist in Internet searches, but results in a lot of unwanted advertisement popping up on the user's screen.
It has the ability to update and register itself making it harder to instantly remove. Security might be at risk when pushing files to the local user.
The Downloader-BT process is visible in the Windows Task Manager, under the name WINNET.EXE. (Note: there may be other regular files using this same name). The process can be killed manually or automatically by using VirusScan.
The software can also be removed from your computer via 'Start Menu/Settings/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs'.
The detection of this type of files is not automatically activated.
Users who would like to check for the presence of this kind of files on their system should run the command line scanner with the /PROGRAM switch.
Please note that VirusScan 7 has also an option, which enables users to detect this kind of program automatically (see below).
