Characteristics
The trojan is dropped by a Word macro virus as C:\SETVER.EXE. Infected documents and templates are detected as W97M/Generic by McAfee products using the 4116 DATs or greater. The Word macro component is described here.
This DOS trojan delivers a destructive payload targetting the Master Boot Record (MBR) of the victim machine.
When run for the first time, it overwrites the MBR with code it carries, and then quits. Upon rebooting, the MBR is overwritten with zeroes and the machine will fail to reboot.
Symptoms
Failure to reboot. MBR containing only zeroes.
Method of Infection
The MBR is overwritten with code carried within the trojan. Upon rebooting the machine, the MBR is overwritten with zeroes.
Removal
All Users:
Use current engine and DAT files for detection and removal.
Modifications made to the system Registry and/or INI files for the purposes of hooking system startup, will be successfully removed if cleaning with the recommended engine and DAT combination (or higher).

All Information
Overview -
This is a trojan detection. Unlike viruses, trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that they are beneficial or wanted. The most common installation methods involve system or security exploitation, and unsuspecting users manually executing unknown programs. Distribution channels include email, malicious or hacked web pages, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), peer-to-peer networks, etc.
