Characteristics

This spyware trojan is created with the SC-KeyLog application. This application is designed to build keyloggers for the purpose of spying on others. The application itself is detected as Keylog-SC with the command-line scanner and the /PROGRAM switch (or VirusScan 7), while the trojans it creates are detected as Keylog-SCLog.

The Keylog-SC trojan can vary from sample to sample as various options can be specified at the time of creation. This description is meant simply as a guide. Newer variants of this trojan may require the latest DAT/Engine files. When run, a message box may be displayed containing whatever text the author specified. Typically the executable will be copied to the WINDOWS SYSTEM directory as one of the following filenames (though almost any valid file name is possible):

  • explorer
  • mnsvcsp
  • ntvdscm
  • secsrvc
  • scklchk
  • sysfrcx
  • fatrecov
  • tapiexec
  • win_spool2
A registry run key is created:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
    RunServices "%filename%" = %trojan path%
A .DAT file may be created in the SYSTEM directory as well, to store captured system events. Event-logging includes: user logon/shutdown data, application (.exe/.dll) usage, client IP address, typed keystrokes etc. This data is logged and typically mailed to an address specified by the author, as well as the SMTP server to be used for mailing.

Symptoms

Personal firewall program alerting that a foreign application is trying to access the Internet.

Method of Infection

Trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that the executable is something beneficial. Distribution channels include IRC, peer-to-peer networks, newsgroup postings, email, etc.

Removal

All Users:
Use specified engine and DAT files for detection and removal.

Modifications made to the system Registry and/or INI files for the purposes of hooking system startup, will be successfully removed if cleaning with the recommended engine and DAT combination (or higher).

Additional Windows ME/XP removal considerations

The most common installation methods involve system or security exploitation, and unsuspecting users manually executing unknown programs. Distribution channels include email, malicious or hacked web pages, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), peer-to-peer networks, etc.

Aliases
