Characteristics

This trojan poses as an anti-virus program and a file commonly associated with an email hoax. The trojan is designed to display popup windows and alter the default search page, and start page of Internet Explorer.

Symptoms

When run, the trojan copies itself to the WINDOWS SYSTEM (%SysDir%) folder as:

  • AVIRCHK.EXE
  • JDBGMRG.EXE (NOTE: This filename is close to a common system file JDBGMGR.EXE, but NOT the same)
Several registry run keys are created to load the trojan at startup:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
    Run "MSConfigr" = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\JDBGMRG.EXE
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
    Run "VirusCheckII" = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\AVIRCHK.EXE
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
    RunServices "MSConfigr" = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\JDBGMRG.EXE
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
    RunServices "VirusCheckII"= C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\AVIRCHK.EXE
An additional marker key is created:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
    CurrentVersion "OEMCurrentVersion" = tVersion

Method of Infection

Trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that the executable is something beneficial. Distribution channels include IRC, peer-to-peer networks, newsgroup postings, etc. This trojan may be distributed under the pretense that it is an anti-virus checker program.

Removal

All Users:
Use specified engine and DAT files for detection and removal.

Modifications made to the system Registry and/or INI files for the purposes of hooking system startup, will be successfully removed if cleaning with the recommended engine and DAT combination (or higher).
