Characteristics

The W97M/Generic.dam is a detection to detect certain kinds of inactive virus remnants. These inactive viruses are caused by disinfecting with some older antivirus products. Since some of our competitors detect these inactive viruses as if they were real infections, so we are forced to detect these remnants as well. W97M/Generic.dam detects these kind of remnants and removes the last traces from the file.

Symptoms

Macro warning when opening a file, but no macros are visible in the VBA editor.

Method of Infection

All Information

Overview -

This is a virus detection. Viruses are programs that self-replicate recursively, meaning that infected systems spread the virus to other systems, which then propagate the virus further. While many viruses contain a destructive payload, it's quite common for viruses to do nothing more than spread from one system to another.
