Characteristics
This is a class module macro virus for Word97/2000 documents and templates. This virus exists within the first VB project named "ThisDocument" and also contains a form module named "tppform".
Comments within the virus code which are never displayed:
"Tarapoto Virus by the Darktpp"
This virus also performs a self check within the virus code for the comment "'The dark" before infecting global template. If the comment line exists, the virus assumes it has already infected NORMAL.DOT.
This virus contains some date activated payloads/message boxes which are mentioned below.
Symptoms
On any day this message may appear:
"Tarapoto Virus 2000"
"The Dark is Ready... Este documento es una basura"
On 1st of any even month (i.e. February, April, June etc), this message may appear:
"TARAPOTO VIRUS/tpp.win"
"(UserName) : Tu Pc esta bajo mi control; Visita Tarapoto Ciudad de las Palmeras. Virus creado por 'The Dark' tpp e-mail thedarktpp"
On 1st of September, this virus attempts to delete "c:\command.com" and display this message:
"TARAPOTO VIRUS/tpp.win"
"Hoy cumple " (# equal to current year - 1979) " años mi creador 'The Dark' y por eso nadie trabaja hoy. "
Method of Infection
This virus hooks Word events of closing documents, viewing VB Editor, clicking on menu options "Help|About", "Tools|Macro", "Tools|Customize|Keyboard" and "File|SaveAs". This virus intercepts calls to these selections in an effort to maximize chance of infection.

All Information
Overview -
This is a virus detection. Viruses are programs that self-replicate recursively, meaning that infected systems spread the virus to other systems, which then propagate the virus further. While many viruses contain a destructive payload, it's quite common for viruses to do nothing more than spread from one system to another.
