Characteristics

This is an Internet worm which is MAPI aware however requires VB6DE.DLL, a Visual Basic 6 runtime Library files, in order to run or install. This Internet worm may be received from someone you know as the attachment "Meltingscreen.exe".

When this program is run, it will copy itself as an existing filename in the Windows folder, and copy the replaced file to a different extension of .BIN.

This trojan is a functional screensaver on applicable systems and resembles as the name would suggest, a melting away of the screen.

Symptoms

.EXE files renamed to .BIN extension in the Windows folder and creation of 18Kb files of same name with .EXE extension. Receipt of the email message or notice from members from your address list that you have sent an email message containing the trojan.

Method of Infection

Running this trojan will install on the local hard drive where it will run memory resident.

Script,Batch,Macro and non memory-resident:
Use current engine and DAT files for detection and removal.

PE,Trojan,Internet Worm and memory resident :
Use specified engine and DAT files for detection. To remove, boot to MS-DOS mode or use a boot diskette and use the command line scanner:

SCANPM /ADL /CLEAN /ALL

Users should not trust file icons, particularly when receiving files from others via P2P clients, IRC, email or other mediums where users can share files.
