Overview

This is a virus detection. Viruses are programs that self-replicate recursively, meaning that infected systems spread the virus to other systems, which then propagate the virus further. While many viruses contain a destructive payload, it's quite common for viruses to do nothing more than spread from one system to another.

Characteristics

AIDS is an overwriting, file infecting virus. It infects .COM and .EXE files.

Each time an infected file is executed, the AIDS virus may infect a .COM or .EXE file.

Additional Comments:
The AIDS virus, also known as the Hahaha virus in Europe and referred to as the Taunt virus by IBM, is a generic .COM and .EXE file infector. When the virus activates, it displays the message "Your computer now has AIDS", with AIDS covering about half of the screen. The system is then halted, and must be powered down and rebooted to restart it. Since this virus overwrites the first 13,952 bytes of the executable program, the files must be deleted and replaced with clean copies in order to remove the virus. It is not possible to recover the overwritten portion of the program. Note: this is NOT the Aids Info Disk/PC Cyborg Trojan. Known variant(s) of AIDS are:

Symptoms

When the virus activates, it displays the message

Your computer now has AIDS

The system locked, and must be rebooted.

The virus overwrites the first 13,952 bytes of the executable files, making them unrecoverable, they must be deleted. The file can only be restored through a backup.

Method of Infection

The only way to infect a computer with a file infecting virus is to execute an infected file on the computer. The infected file may come from a multitude of sources including: floppy diskettes, downloads through an online service, network, etc. Once the infected file is executed, the virus may activate.

Users should not trust file icons, particularly when receiving files from others via P2P clients, IRC, email or other mediums where users can share files.

It is very common for macro viruses to disable options within Office applications for example in Word, the macro protection warning commonly is disabled. After cleaning macro viruses, ensure that your previously set options are again enabled.
