Characteristics

1385 is a memory resident, file infecting virus. It infects .COM files, including COMMAND.COM. It does not, however, infect small .COM files.

Upon infection, the 1385 virus becomes memory resident as a low system memory Terminate-and-Stay Resident (TSR) of 3,376 bytes. Interrupts 13, 21, CC, and F8 are hooked by the 1385 virus in memory. Also at this time, the virus infects C:\COMMAND.COM and one .COM file in the current drive and directory.

Once the 1385 virus is memory resident, it infects .COM files as they are executed, plus one additional .COM file in the current directory. This mechanism allows the virus to spread very quickly.

It is not known if 1385 does anything besides replicate.

Additional Comments:
The 1385 virus was submitted in February, 1992. Its origin or point of isolation are unknown. 1385 is a memory resident infector of .COM programs, including COMMAND.COM. It does not, however, infect very small .COM programs. The first time a program infected with the 1385 virus is executed, the 1385 virus will install itself memory resident as a low system memory TSR of 3,376 bytes. Interrupts 13, 21, CC, and F8 will be hooked by the 1385 virus in memory. Also at this time, the virus will infect C:\COMMAND.COM if it was not previously infected, and one .COM program located in the current drive and directory. Once the 1385 virus is memory resident, it will infect .COM programs as they are executed, plus one additional .COM program in the current directory. This mechanism allows the virus to spread very quickly. Programs infected with the 1385 virus will have a file length increase of 1,385 bytes with the virus being located at the beginning of the program. The file's date and time in the DOS disk directory listing will not have been altered. Two text strings occur in the viral code in infected programs: "c:\COMMAND.COM" "PATH=" Systems infected with the 1385 virus may experience system hangs when .COM programs are executed. It is unknown if 1385 does anything besides replicate.

Symptoms

Two text strings occur in the viral code in infected files:

"c:\COMMAND.COM"
"PATH="

Systems infected with the 1385 virus may experience system hangs when .COM files are executed.

Infected files have a file length increase of 1,385 bytes. The virus is located at the beginning of the file. The file's date and time in the DOS disk directory listing are not altered.

Method of Infection

The only way to infect a computer with a file infecting virus is to execute an infected file on the computer. The infected file may come from a multitude of sources including: floppy diskettes, downloads through an online service, network, etc. Once the infected file is executed, the virus may activate.

Removal

All Users :
Script,Batch,Macro and non memory-resident:
Use current engine and DAT files for detection and removal.

PE,Trojan,Internet Worm and memory resident :
Use specified engine and DAT files for detection. To remove, boot to MS-DOS mode or use a boot diskette and use the command line scanner:

SCANPM /ADL /CLEAN /ALL

Additional Windows ME/XP removal considerations

Users should not trust file icons, particularly when receiving files from others via P2P clients, IRC, email or other mediums where users can share files.

All Information

Overview -

This is a virus detection. Viruses are programs that self-replicate recursively, meaning that infected systems spread the virus to other systems, which then propagate the virus further. While many viruses contain a destructive payload, it's quite common for viruses to do nothing more than spread from one system to another.
