The actions performed by a potentially unwanted program could include all or any of the following:

  • Drop/Download other related/unrelated malware onto the machine
  • Conceal the presence of itself thereby preventing its removal
  • Inject its code into other legitimate processes
  • Disable security software installed
  • Alter settings of other applications like Internet Explorer
  • Send personal information to third party sites without user's consent
  • Display pop-up advertisments
  • Allow remote administration of the machine by users other than the administrator
  • Redirect Internet connections third part ISPs to secure additional connection charges for the third party
  • Replace the Internet browser's homepage, modify search results
  • Add toolbars, menu items, search bars to the Internet browser
  • Modify's the machine's Layered Service Provider (LSP) to redirect websites and search results

Method of Infection

Potentially unwanted programs do not self-replicate. They spread manually, often under the premise that they are beneficial or wanted. They can either be stand alone applications, or come bundled along with other PUPs, Trojans or Rootkits.

Installation methods involve system or security exploitation, and unsuspecting users manually executing unknown programs.

Distribution channels include email, malicious or hacked web pages, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), peer-to-peer networks, etc.
