Characteristics

This trojan has an icon visually similar to that of the default media player shell registration for an mp3 file extension.  When executed it writes an MP3 called Lagu to the system directory and plays the file.  Additionally it will prevent the use of task manager, regedit, and various other system tools as well as run a batch script that attempts to add an administrative user account to the system with the name Vergone when the command shell is launched.

After execution, the trojan copies itself at the following locations on the system volume:
• C:\WINDOWS\system\x-executor.exe
• C:\WINDOWS\system32\vergon1885.exe
• C:\Backup\WMP_10 for XP.exe
• C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\user32.exe
• C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\_default.exe

The trojan attempts to copy itself at the following locations on accessible removable volumes:
• [drive]:\Secret\ABG_xxx.3gp.exe
• [drive]:\Tools\AVSEQ01.mpg.exe

The trojan attempts to place a BAT file in the following location that creates a new user account with administrative privileges.
• C:\WINDOWS\System32\man.bat

This BAT file is run when a user attempts to open a command shell due to the addition of the following registry key:
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor
AutoRun=”C:\WINDOWS\System32\man.bat"

These files are run at startup as the following keys are added to the registry:
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Wmplayer="C:\WINDOWS\System32\vergon1885.exe"
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Shell="Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\vergon1885.exe"

This trojan additionally modifies these registry keys:
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system
DisableTaskMgr=dword:00000001
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SystemFileProtection
ShowPopups= dword:00000000
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Shell= "Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\vergon1885.exe"
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogo
Userinit= "C:\WINDOWS\System32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\System32\vergon1885.exe"
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot
AlternateShell="C:\WINDOWS\System32\vergon1885.exe"

Symptoms

• Presence of the files and registry keys listed above
• Inability to launch the Task Manager and Regedit
• A batch file similar to what is shown below is displayed when the command shell is launched.

Method of Infection

Trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that the executable is something beneficial. Distribution channels include IRC, peer-to-peer networks, newsgroup postings, etc.

However they may themselves be downloaded by other viruses and/or Trojans to be installed on the user's system.

Many of these additionally are mass spammed by the author to entice people into double-clicking on them.

Alternatively they may be installed by visiting a malicious web page (either by clicking on a link, or by the website hosting a scripted exploit which installs the trojan onto the user's system with no user interaction.

Removal

All Users:
Use current engine and DAT files for detection and removal.

Modifications made to the system Registry and/or INI files for the purposes of hooking system startup, will be successfully removed if cleaning with the recommended engine and DAT combination (or higher).

All Information

Overview -

This is a trojan detection. Unlike viruses, trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that they are beneficial or wanted. The most common installation methods involve system or security exploitation, and unsuspecting users manually executing unknown programs. Distribution channels include email, malicious or hacked web pages, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), peer-to-peer networks, etc.
