Characteristics
This is the detection for a trojan that is reported to be distributed by the name Stickrep.dll, its default installation path is %sysdir%. However, to install it is not dependent upon the directory it resides in. Upon execution the DLL file creates a tray icon showing a fake warning message as shown in the image below.
Upon clicking this warning message one of the two things can happen.
- If SpywareQuake is not installed, the browser may open a page pointing to http://www.spywarequake.com in order to get it downloaded by the user or it may display the following dialog asking to download spywareQuake.
- If SpywareQuake is installed, it may open up the SpywareQuake Application.
The DLL contacts the following site to download the application.
- www.urgentsystemupdate.com [ip = 85.255.117.202]
- www.spywarequake.com [ip = 85.255.117.202]
Both the domain names have same IP address which is contacted by SpywareQuake application as well for updates.
An whois on this IP reveals the other domain servers listed by the same registrant.
- http://urgentsystemupdate.biz [ip = 195.225.176.76]
UrgentSystemupdate.biz is nothing but the download page for infamous Adware-Spyaxe.
Symptoms
Presence of aforementioned properties.
Method of Infection
Trojans do not self-replicate. They spread manually, often under the premise that the executable is something beneficial. Trojans may also be received as a result of poor security practices, or un-patched machines and vulnerable systems. Distribution channels include IRC, peer-to-peer networks, email, newsgroups postings, etc
