Characteristics

The 4726 DAT files contain an incorrect identification on a limited number of executables. This was corrected in the 4727 DAT files. If you are seeing a DollarRevenue detection, ensure that you are running the 4727 DAT files.

DollarRevenue trojan was previously classified as Adware-DollarRevenue. This advertising related program was reclassified due to deceptive practices. The trojan downloads many different executables from dollarrevenue.com servers using filenames such as mousepad4.exe and keyboard4.exe. The downloaded programs include many different adware programs, as well as other trojan files. Included on this list is:

  • Adware-DCToolbar
  • Adware-DFC
  • Adware-DigInk
  • Adware-Isearch
  • Adware-Look2Me
  • Adware-SurfSideKick.dr
  • Adware-Zeno
  • Downloader-ACV
  • NDotNet
  • Uploader-R

Symptoms

- Presence of a file named drsmartload.exe
- Unexpected connections to promo.dollarrevenue.com

Method of Infection

This trojan is known to be installed by drive-by-download sites, and other trojans.  A recent publication on "Rootkit-hearse" (PWS-Banker.be ), revealed that the site involved in that incident was also installing the DollarRevenue trojan.

All Information

Overview -

This is a trojan detection. Unlike viruses, trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that they are beneficial or wanted. The most common installation methods involve system or security exploitation, and unsuspecting users manually executing unknown programs. Distribution channels include email, malicious or hacked web pages, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), peer-to-peer networks, etc.
