Characteristics

This is a BackDoor trojan written in the Perl script language. This trojan enables the intruder remote shell access.

Most recently, this trojan was found to be used in instrusions involving the Linux/Lupper.worm.b virus. Upon successful penetration, Perl/BackDoor-CXZ.gen may perform the following:

  • Sends kernel type and version information to the intruder
  • Disable user shell command log to hide intruder traces
  • Connects back to the intruder's machine on an arbitrary port providing the intruder with remote shell access.

Symptoms

  • Presence of one or more of the followings:
    • /tmp/ping.txt
  • Unexpected outgoing connections on port 8080 or other ports

Method of Infection

This trojan is typically downloaded onto the victim machine by exploiting a web server script vulnerability and executed with the user privileges of the web server user (usually "nobody" or "apache" on a Linux or BSD machine).

Removal

AVERT recommends to always use latest DATs and engine. This threat will be cleaned if you have this combination.
