Characteristics
This trojan was originally detected as Adware-Lop. Due to stealthing and obfuscation mechanisms it uses and the very large number of new variants released in recent weeks, the classification has been changed. This application generates extra pop-up ads while using Internet Explorer. Many versions of this application exist and this description may not cover all.
Installation
Upon execution a folder is created with random words for the name, such as the following:
- C:\Documents and Settings\%User%\Application Data\Gram User That Play
In that folder, a file is also created with random words for the name, such as the following:
- C:\Documents and Settings\%User%\Application Data\Gram User That Play\Peak Info Cool
This is a data file; it is not harmful by itself and neither the folder nor the file are visible through normal means.
A corresponding registry key may be created, using the same random words:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\%Random Words%
This application injects itself into Internet Explorer, and launches Internet Explorer in the background. It then connects to various URLs to retrieve information for display, such as the following:
- ayb.lop.com
- d4308.upd.lop.com
- ayb.maximumexperience.com
- ayb.trinityacquisitions.com
- r25407.upd.lop.com
- lop.com/search
Symptoms
Extra pop-up windows appear when using Internet Explorer.
Method of Infection
Trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually or by means of an exploit, such as through a malicious script in a web page.
Removal
All Users:
Use current engine and DAT files for detection and removal.
Modifications made to the system Registry and/or INI files for the purposes of hooking system startup, will be successfully removed if cleaning with the recommended engine and DAT combination (or higher).

All Information
Overview -
This is a trojan detection. Unlike viruses, trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that they are beneficial or wanted. The most common installation methods involve system or security exploitation, and unsuspecting users manually executing unknown programs. Distribution channels include email, malicious or hacked web pages, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), peer-to-peer networks, etc.
