Characteristics

This detection is for a remote access trojan written in VB.

Upon execution, the trojan copies itself as following:

  • c:\System Volume Information\\upnpclient.exe

It creates a dll file in the Windows directory:

  • Acrobat.dll

It creates a service called "Univesal Plug and Play Device Client" to load the exe at system start up.  The following registry key is created:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UPNPClient

The following registry key is created to register the dll:

  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A452DA63-4286-48EB-A838-3BA85C3049F5}
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Acrobat.Assistant

Once running on the victim machine, the trojan attempts to connect to a specific website for command information.  The trojan can perform various backdoor functions, such as:

  • Sending popup messages
  • Executing any DOS command
  • Create registry key/value
  • Keylogging/information stealing
  • Open network connection
  • Upload/download/execute files on the victim machine

Symptoms

  • Existence of the files/Registry keys detailed above

Method of Infection

Trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that the executable is something beneficial. Distribution channels include IRC, peer-to-peer networks, newsgroup postings, email, etc.

Removal

All Users:
Use current engine and DAT files for detection and removal.

Modifications made to the system Registry and/or INI files for the purposes of hooking system startup, will be successfully removed if cleaning with the recommended engine and DAT combination (or higher).

The most common installation methods involve system or security exploitation, and unsuspecting users manually executing unknown programs. Distribution channels include email, malicious or hacked web pages, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), peer-to-peer networks, etc.

Aliases

  • Backdoor.Win32.VB.yo (AVP)
