Distribution

This is not a virus or trojan. It is a legitimate application for installing Windows services via a DOS command line. The application may be misused by certain pieces of malware in order to facilitate remote downloads.

Installation

When executed via the command line, here are the following command line options:

Usage: instsrv
           to install a service, or:
           instsrv remove
           to remove a service

In the case of this service, a more specific example
           instsrv FloppyLocker c:\q_a\samples\sd_flppy\service\floplock.exe
           (note fully-qualified path name to .exe)
           instsrv FloppyLocker remove

Users who would like to check for the presence of potentially unwanted programs on their system should run the command line scanner with the /PROGRAM switch.

Please note that VirusScan 7, and higher, has an option that enables users to detect this kind of program automatically (see below).
