Characteristics

This detection is for a trojan that can steal machine specific information, download files to the local machine, and use the computer as connection relay, etc.

The trojan arrives in a dropper file.  When the dropper is run, it creates the following two files in the Windows system (%SysDir) directory:

  • service.exe (45,056)
  • explorer.exe (81,920)

The following registry keys are created:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
    "Shell" = %SysDir%\explorer.exe
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventNotification
    "DisplayName" = COM+ Event Notification
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventNotification
    "ImagePath" = %SysDir%\service.exe -service

The trojan attempts to download remote configuration file:

  • Peep@203.202.128.50:443$$$

It can perform various operations according to the configuration, such as:

  • Gather and send machine specific information
  • Download and execute file
  • Open socket and send data to other hosts

Symptoms

Existence of files and registry keys mentioned above.

Method of Infection

Trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that the executable is something beneficial. Distribution channels include IRC, peer-to-peer networks, newsgroup postings, etc.

Removal

All Information

Overview -

This is a trojan detection. Unlike viruses, trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that they are beneficial or wanted. The most common installation methods involve system or security exploitation, and unsuspecting users manually executing unknown programs. Distribution channels include email, malicious or hacked web pages, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), peer-to-peer networks, etc.
