Overview

This is a virus detection. Viruses are programs that self-replicate recursively, meaning that infected systems spread the virus to other systems, which then propagate the virus further. While many viruses contain a destructive payload, it's quite common for viruses to do nothing more than spread from one system to another.

Characteristics

McAfee users were proactively protected from this threat under the following conditions (detection name New Malware.b):

• 4.2.40+ scan engine in use
• 4302 DATs files
• program heuristics enabled
• compressed file scanning enabled (default)

It is written in Delphi, and packed with UPX.

This worm spreads via the WinMX File Sharing Network. 

It also connects to an Internet Relay Chat server, awaiting  further commands from a remote attacker.

Symptoms

When run, it copies itself into the %Windir% folder as taskmgr.com and creates the following registry run keys to load itself at system startup:

• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
  Run "taskmgr"  = %Windir%\taskmgr.com
  
• HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "WinMX" = C:\Program~1\WinMX\WinMX.exe -m

It also drops Library.dat (contains encrypted data) into folder C:\Program Files\WinMX.

It contacts the IRC server kuthoer.mine.nu , joins a specified channel, and awaits further commands.  Such commands provide a remote attacker the ability to perform various tasks, such as:

• Retrieving machine information
• Opening CD ROM Drive
• Flipping Screen
• Executing Files ont he system
• Displaying messages on screen

It creates the folder %Windir%\SYSDLL\ and copies itself as the following files with .EXE extension.
