Characteristics

This is a password stealing trojan. There are several variants of the trojan. The description is a general guide.

When run, the trojan copies itself as:

  • c:\WINDOWS\unicall.exe
  • c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msater.exe
  • c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\restory.exe
  • c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\sysfiler.exe

It creates a registry run key to load itself at Windows start up.

  • HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows "load" C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msater.exe
  • HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "restory"  C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\restory.exe
  • HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "sysfiler"  C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\sysfiler.exe

The trojan changes the original Internet Explorer HomePage settings to various websites, depending one the variant.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main "Start Page"

The trojan can gather password information from active windows on the desktop

Symptoms

Existence of files and registry keys mentioned above.

Iternet Explorer home page being reset to a different website.

Method of Infection

Trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that the executable is something beneficial. Distribution channels include IRC, peer-to-peer networks, newsgroup postings, etc

Removal

All Users:
Use specified engine and DAT files for detection and removal.

Modifications made to the system Registry and/or INI files for the purposes of hooking system startup, will be successfully removed if cleaning with the recommended engine and DAT combination (or higher).
