Overview

This is a virus detection. Viruses are programs that self-replicate recursively, meaning that infected systems spread the virus to other systems, which then propagate the virus further. While many viruses contain a destructive payload, it's quite common for viruses to do nothing more than spread from one system to another.

Characteristics

This is a heuristic detection added in February 2003 which indicates that a file is possibly infected with an unknown Win32 virus. Win32 stands for 32-bit Windows and includes Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP, ME, etc.

The "g2" suffix indicates a virus entry-point in the last section. It is the most frequently infection method.

If you receive this alert, ensure that you are using the latest engine and DATs and send a copy of the file to AVERT if it is still detected as "New Win32.g2"
