Characteristics

This detection covers the VNC application when it has been renamed to EXPLORER.EXE. The W32/Deloder.worm drops an installer (INST.EXE), which installs the remote access VNC application using the filename EXPLORER.EXE. Although this application is not considered to be a trojan under normal circumstances, this malicious use is considered to be trojanic.

Symptoms

- System listening on TCP Port 5800
- Presence of the following hidden files in the %Fonts% folder:

  • VNCHooks.dll (32,768 bytes)
  • explorer.exe (212,992 bytes)
  • omnithread_rt.dll
Note: Only the .EXE file will be detected with the specified DATs, as the other compnents are standard, well-named, files.

Method of Infection

This trojan is installed by a trojan dropper. The dropper is installed by W32/Deloder.worm. When run, the installer creates the following registry run key to load the trojan at startup:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
    Run "Explorer" = %Fonts folder%\explorer.exe

Removal

All Users:
Use specified engine and DAT files for detection and removal.

Modifications made to the system Registry and/or INI files for the purposes of hooking system startup, will be successfully removed if cleaning with the recommended engine and DAT combination (or higher).

All Information

Overview -

This is a trojan detection. Unlike viruses, trojans do not self-replicate. They are spread manually, often under the premise that they are beneficial or wanted. The most common installation methods involve system or security exploitation, and unsuspecting users manually executing unknown programs. Distribution channels include email, malicious or hacked web pages, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), peer-to-peer networks, etc.
