Overview

This is a virus detection. Viruses are programs that self-replicate recursively, meaning that infected systems spread the virus to other systems, which then propagate the virus further. While many viruses contain a destructive payload, it's quite common for viruses to do nothing more than spread from one system to another.

Characteristics

This threat is detected as X97M/Rawo. It is a small virus and contains one module - Sheet17. It is a direct infector which infects open workbooks on closing. It does not infect workbooks that contain a worksheet with the name - Sheet17.

An error message will be displayed 30 minutes after opening the infected document. The virus contains a bug in the code which causes Excel to produce the error message

Method of Infection

Opening an infected workbook will directly infect any workbook opened.

Removal

Use current engine and DAT files for detection and removal.

It is very common for macro viruses to disable options within Office applications for example in Word, the macro protection warning commonly is disabled. After cleaning macro viruses, ensure that your previously set options are again enabled.
